Dental Fillings: What to Expect

Cavities are an extremely common occurrence in children and adults. To prevent further dental problems, it’s necessary to address the issue as soon as a cavity is present. Dental fillings are the treatment used to restore the tooth to its normal state. Learn more about cavities and the process of a dental filling.

What is a Cavity?

As a result of tooth decay, small holes can form which are known as cavities. There are many signs of cavities including visible holes, toothaches and sensitivity. Overtime cavities can grow bigger and deeper, causing even more harm to your teeth. If you notice a cavity, it’s important to get it filled as soon as possible. What is a Filling?

Fillings are used to replace relatively small amounts of damaged tooth structure. Materials used in fillings most often are composites that are tooth colored. Composites are primarily made of glass particles in a plastic matrix. This procedure is necessary to save the entire tooth structure as it protects its interior from further infection.

What Happens During a Dental Filling?

During a visit for a dental filling, the first step can include numbing the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic. This can prevent any pain throughout the process. Although, there are instances when numbing isn’t necessary. This can be the case when the cavity is still relatively small.

Once the patient is comfortable, the next part involves the removal of the decayed portion of the tooth using a special tool. After it’s completely cleared, the tooth is then ready to start to be prepared for the filling. The dentist will ensure that all debris and bacteria are cleaned out. The hollowed-out area of the tooth will be filled with the filling material. To help it harden, a special light will be applied. Next, the dentist will polish and smooth the filling to make it feel natural and not interfere with daily activities.
