Keeping your smile healthy starts at home. Here are four do’s and don’t when it comes to taking care of your teeth!
DO:
Brush your teeth for two minutes each time
Most people brush regularly, but not always as long as needed. Brushing your teeth for two minutes gives you enough time to ensure the plaque on your teeth is being removed.
Scrape your tongue
If it’s not already, scraping your tongue should be added to your dental routine. Just like your teeth, your tongue carries harmful bacteria and plaque. After brushing, gently scrape your tongue to help keep your teeth healthy.
Drink plenty of water
Staying hydrated helps keep your mouth from being dry which can lead to a number of dental issues. To keep your mouth moist, remember to drink water throughout the day.
Keep an eye on bleeding gums and other abnormalities
Oftentimes, bleeding gums are simply a result of brushing too hard. Though if you find that your gums are consistently bleeding or are sore, it could be a sign that there is a more serious issue. Additionally, be on the lookout for any grey, brown or black spots appearing on your teeth and if you’re experiencing any extreme sensitivity. Catching dental issues early on makes it easier to treat and can be less expensive.
DON’T
Brush hard or use stiff-bristled toothbrushes.
While tooth enamel is the hardest substance in our bodies, brushing your teeth with force or using stiff-bristled toothbrushes may do more damage than good. Regularly brushing this way can wear away enamel and lead to gum recession.
Skip brushing your teeth at night
After a long day, it can be extremely tempting to forgo this part of your nightly routine. When this step is skipped, you’re letting all of the food and bacteria in your mouth from the day sit on your teeth for the rest of the night, often eight hours, while you sleep. This is a prime time for cavities to form.
Try DIY whitening methods
Oftentimes, DIY tooth whitening methods include ingredients that can be harsh and abrasive to your teeth. Taking part in these trends can leave you vulnerable to damage to your tooth enamel, leaving it weak and thin.
Wait out a toothache or oral pain
Ignoring any kind of tooth pain tends to make the situation worse. As a sign of an underlying issue, toothaches should be addressed as soon as possible. Booking an appointment right away can help prevent more damage from occurring.
